3-day-a-week marathon training plan

Short on time or prone to injury? You can train for a marathon on three runs a week. Each run has a clear job: a quality session, an easy run and the long run.

This sample starts at 15 miles a week. Because there are fewer runs, each one carries more of the mileage: the long run grows from 6 to 20 miles and the week peaks at 39.5 miles, with recovery weeks built in.

Who this plan is for

  • You can only run three days a week, or you recover slowly.
  • You like to cross-train on the other days.
  • Your marathon is four months or more away.

How to adjust it

  • Add cycling or swimming on non-running days for extra fitness.
  • Pick the day with the most time for the long run.
  • If a fourth run fits later, switch to four days and the plan rebalances.

Why this 3-day-a-week marathon plan works

Make every run count

With three runs a week, there are no junk miles. Each session has a clear purpose.

Cross-train if you like

Cycling or swimming on non-running days adds aerobic fitness without the impact.

Long run on your freest day

Pick the day you have the most time and energy. The plan arranges the week around it.

3-day-a-week marathon plan FAQ

Can you run a marathon training three days a week?

Yes. Many runners finish marathons on three runs a week, especially with cross-training on other days.

Which three days should I run?

Spread them out, for example Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday, so you always have a recovery day between runs.

Is 3 days a week enough for a good marathon time?

It's enough to finish well. For an ambitious time goal, four or five runs a week gives you more room to build.

How long are the long runs?

This sample builds to 20 miles. With fewer runs, the long run is a bigger share of each week.

Does cross-training count?

It builds aerobic fitness without impact. It doesn't replace running, but it helps, especially for injury-prone runners.

What's free and what's paid
