Training

Your race pace is not your training pace

Most of a good training plan is run at an easy, conversational pace, typically 60 to 90 seconds per mile slower than marathon pace. Faster sessions (tempo runs and intervals) are a small, deliberate part of each week.

PaceLadder works out each of those paces for you from a recent race or your goal, and puts them into every session of a plan built around your race date.

How do I calculate my running pace?

Divide your finish time by the distance. A 4:00:00 marathon is 240 minutes over 26.2 miles, or 9:09 per mile (5:41 per km). The calculator above does this for any distance and shows your splits.

What pace do I need for a sub-4 marathon?

9:09 per mile or 5:41 per km on average. Most runners aim a few seconds faster, around 9:00 per mile, to allow for crowds, water stations and the extra distance from not running the perfect line.

What is a good pace for a beginner?

Whatever lets you finish feeling strong. Most first-time marathoners finish between 4:30 and 5:30, which is 10:18 to 12:36 per mile. Your easy training runs should be one to two minutes per mile slower than race pace.

Should I run even splits?

Even or slightly negative splits (second half a little faster) are the most reliable way to run your best time. Starting too fast is the most common reason runners slow badly in the final miles.
